Dr. Harry M. Tiebout was the first psychiatrist to endorse Alcoholics Anonymous as a means of recovery from alcoholism. He had keen insight into the ego problem and a gimlet eye for the tricks and defenses of the alcoholic. Dr. Tiebout was also the first of his profession to deeply understand the therapeutic power of the spiritual approach in cracking the tough ego of the compulsive drinker, and to express that understanding in terms that make sense both to medical men and to laymen.
